Características generales del virus Y de la papa y determinación de su presencia en Nicotiana tabacum L. en Cuba

Abstract

Tobacco, obtained mainly from Nicotiana tabacum, is one of the main non-food agricultural products around the world. N. tabacum. plants grow in several provinces of Cuba, however from 2010 tobacco production significantly decreased, behavior that could be related to various factors and the incidence of disease in which the virus and potato (PVY) plays an important role. This work aims to present the main features of Potato Virus Y (PVY) and analyze the current situation of its diagnosis in N. tabacum in Cuba. PVY contain a single-stranded positive RNA genome that is translated as a single polyprotein and these elements give to the virus a high replicative rate and variability. The presence of PVY have been detected in Cuba, which may represent a potential yield of the crop and thus for the country’s economic indicators threat.
