Distribution in Cuba of sugarcane orange rust
Main Article Content
Abstract
Orange rust, caused by Puccinia kuehnii, is one of the most important sugarcane diseases. Until now, orange rust has been reported only in sugarcane experimental areas of Matanzas, Villa Clara, Camaguey and Santiago de Cuba provinces. However, its presence in sugarcane commercial fields of different Cuban regions have not been informed. The aim of this work was to inform the orange rust distribution in Cuban sugarcane commercial fields, obtained from a national survey conducted by the National System of Plant Protection, during 2009-2016. Samples with rust symptoms of 26 varieties from 12 provinces were analyzed. Rust specimens were morphological characterized and identified. The presence of P. kuehnii was detected in comercial fields of Mayabeque, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba provinces, on varieties B7274, C1051-73, C137-81, C140-81, C266-70, C323-68, C86-12, C86-156, C86-503, C89-147, C90-105, C90-317, C90-469, C90-647, C93-540, C93-567, C95-414, C96-435, Co997 and CP52-43. Uredospores from analyzed specimens, with morphological characteristics within the range described for P. kuehnii, showed a great variability with shapes obovoid, pyriform, almost rectangular and ellipsoidal, variable in size 27,5-62,5 x 17,5-37,5 (42,8 x 24,7) µm, echinulate, with orange to light brownwalls with 1-2,5 µm thick and most of them had a pronounced apical wall thickening of 3-9 μm. The presence of paraphysis was recorded only on B7274, C89-147 and C95-414 varieties and Telia and teliospores were not observed in any sample.
