Preliminary evaluation of Carpoglyphus lactis (L.) (Astigmata: Carpoglyphidae) in raw sugar and alternative diet

Abstract

C. lactis is known for its feeding preference for dried fruits, in Cuba it has been registered in several products, it has been reported as sugar pest only in Japan and in the People’s Republic of China. In China it has been detected in bulk sugar imported from Cuba which and demands quality and safety of this product. The objective of this work was to develop the rearing to determine the growth of the mite in Sugar and in alternative diets. It was carried out in the Acarology laboratory of the Institute of Plant Health Research. Mites were obtained from infested sugar. Two diets were evaluated, the first 1:1:0.1 and for the second 1:0.01:0.1 (inert substrate: sugar: humectant) and initial inoculums, rearing time and compared between them. The demographic parameters of the mite were verified; Statistical Graphics Corp. 2001 was used. The alternative diets showed demographic parameters similar to those obtained in other basic and applied research. The high and low levels of sugar can be used for rearing management under laboratory conditions. The initial inoculum was most effective when between 100 and 150 mites/ml and cultivation time between 7 and 15 days were used. The volume of the diet for breeding should only occupy 30 % of the unit. The method of collecting and counting the population was easy, practical and effective. The validation of demographic parameters is a useful tool for assessing diets. It is recommended to standardize the method.
