Abstract

Cuban Phytonematodes Defense Program is based on surveys to detect these quarantine pests on important economic crops. A population of Xiphinema genus was found for the first time on the rizosphere of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck, during an inspection in Cienfuegos province. The specimens had two symetric genital branches; a pseudo-organ Z present; tale short, conical and digítate; c´radio between 1.6 and 1.9; vulve position between 49 and 51 %; body length between 2.8 and 3.0 mm; spear length between 170 and 175 um; lip region separated from the body by a weak constriction; body in C shape; tail shape of juvenile stage similar to adult female, and unknown males in the population. These characteristics put them in group 5, codes A4-B2-C4-D4-E5/6-F3-G2-H2-I3-J3-L1, which corresponded with Xiphinema basiri Siddiqi. This is the first report of the species associated with Citrus crops in Cuba, especially on Valencia orange, its host type. Detection of the nematode represents a phytosanitary warning and a contribution to the knowledge of species diversity associated with this crop in the country.
